Chris Smalling is an Englishman who starts regularly for a top six side, which in this day and age is near enough a golden bullet into the national team’s plans, especially for a major tournament.
However, it hasn’t worked out that way for the former Fulham man who has found himself down the pecking order under Gareth Southgate, behind the likes of Leicester centre-half Harry Maguire and will not be going to the World Cup in Russia this summer with England.

There is no doubt that Smalling can be clumsy at times and he does have a mistake in him but at the same time, he has played for an elite club and endured periods of very strong form where he can keep any striker quiet.
